{"id":1566,"date":"2020-07-08T14:52:12","date_gmt":"2020-07-08T21:52:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.crimeandconsequences.blog\/?p=1566"},"modified":"2020-07-24T10:37:55","modified_gmt":"2020-07-24T17:37:55","slug":"ballot-measure-lets-parolees-vote","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.crimeandconsequences.blog\/?p=1566","title":{"rendered":"Ballot Measure Lets Parolees Vote"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the last week of June the California Legislature passed a Constitutional Amendment that, if adopted by the voters this November, would give criminals on parole the right to vote in state and federal elections.\u00a0 Evan Symon of the California Globe <a href=\"https:\/\/californiaglobe.com\/section-2\/senate-passes-amendment-granting-voting-rights-to-felons-on-parole\/\">reports<\/a> that ACA 8 passed 28-9 in the Democrat-controlled state senate and is now on its way to the November 3rd ballot.\u00a0 Spearheading passage of the bill was Northern California Assemblyman Kevin McCarthy, who noted that because a disproportionate number of African Americans are on parole the bar against parolees voting unfairly excludes them.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Senator Jim Nielsen saw things differently, pointing out that among the parolees who would be given the vote are criminals convicted of murder, manslaughter, rape and other violent and serious crimes.\u00a0 &#8220;Part of their sentence is to complete the parole period,&#8221;
