{"id":1729,"date":"2020-07-26T22:31:31","date_gmt":"2020-07-27T05:31:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.crimeandconsequences.blog\/?p=1729"},"modified":"2020-07-26T22:31:31","modified_gmt":"2020-07-27T05:31:31","slug":"when-fudging-language-wont-work-just-go-ahead-and-lie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.crimeandconsequences.blog\/?p=1729","title":{"rendered":"When Fudging Language Won&#8217;t Work, Just Go Ahead and Lie"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In my last <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crimeandconsequences.blog\/2020\/07\/26\/violence-gets-a-new-name\/\">post<\/a>, I noted how anti-police arson, rock throwing and assault have become, in the magical language of criminal justice reformers and their allies in the press, &#8220;&#8216;intensified&#8217; peacefulness.&#8221;\u00a0 There are times, though, when even a seemingly infinite willingness to mangle the meaning of language won&#8217;t get the job done.\u00a0 When this happens, there&#8217;s a ready solution:\u00a0 Lie.<\/p>\n<p>Enter noted criminal justice reformer, Mayor Bill de Blasio.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>As the New York Post <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/07\/22\/democratic-politicians-are-full-of-delusion-devine\/?fbclid=IwAR3Z_615CrUtQDs5q3tf-OSmIWymWY86_iPSfX2eY9SSx1U1d4fBnE9_fjc\">reports<\/a>, de Blasio<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;has convinced himself he is doing a bang-up job at mayor. Maybe he thinks that if he praises himself often enough, people will believe his delusions of competence.<\/p>\n<p>His most recent boast is that emptying the jails has made the city \u201csafer,\u201d even as the homicide rate blows up around him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe now have fewer people in our jails than any time since World War II, and we are safer for it,\u201d he said. Huh? Ask the family of slain 1-year-old Davell Gardner Jr. how safe they feel.<\/p>\n<p>Shootings in the city were up 130 percent last month.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Murder and mayhem in New York City are exploding, but the mayor\u00a0 &#8212;\u00a0 the same mayor who backed ending cash bail, massively cutting the police budget, and ending the (formerly) successful anti-crime unit (in other words, implementing some of the marquee items of criminal justice reform)\u00a0 &#8212;\u00a0 tells us, as such advocates do relentlessly, that their programs will make us safer.<\/p>\n<p>There was a time, it&#8217;s true, when in fact New York City residents, and the rest of us, <em>were<\/em> safer.\u00a0 We grew safer by an enormous measure in the period 1991 &#8211; 2014, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.disastercenter.com\/crime\/uscrime.htm\">when the crime rate fell by about half, and the murder rate fell by more than half<\/a>.\u00a0 This was the era of more funding for police, more pro-active policing, greater use of incarceration, and more rule-driven sentencing.\u00a0 But in the last few years, as &#8220;reform&#8221; measures gained traction and those practices have been rolled back, we&#8217;ve lost a significant portion of the gains.<\/p>\n<p>Criminal justice reform programs have <strong>not<\/strong> made us safer, not in New York City and not in the country as a whole.\u00a0 The aggressive insistence that they have is a point-blank lie.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In my last post, I noted how anti-police arson, rock throwing and assault have become, in the magical language of criminal justice reformers and their allies in the press, &#8220;&#8216;intensified&#8217; peacefulness.&#8221;\u00a0 There are times, though, when even a seemingly infinite willingness to mangle the meaning of language won&#8217;t get the job done.\u00a0 When this happens, there&#8217;s a ready solution:\u00a0 Lie.
