Rafael Mangual has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.city-journal.org\/nyc-public-safety-under-de-blasio?utm_source=City+Journal+Update&amp;utm_campaign=4e09395f6f-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_09_07_10_04&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_6c08930f2b-4e09395f6f-109318249\">this article<\/a> in the City Journal on growing inequality in the impact of crime on New Yorkers.<!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In his 2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UwQNri7NuNk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">inauguration speech<\/a>, New York mayor Bill de Blasio said that he\u2019d take on the city\u2019s elite in the name of \u201csocial and economic justice.\u201d When it came to his signature issue back then\u2014economic inequality\u2014he pledged, using a Dickensian theme, to \u201ctake dead aim at the tale of two cities.\u201d But he also recognized that \u201cour city government\u2019s first responsibility is to keep our neighborhoods safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nearly seven years later, economic inequality under de Blasio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/new-york-citys-income-inequality-gap-hasnt-changed-report-says-11568174460\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hasn\u2019t changed<\/a>. But the unequal distribution of serious violent crimes like shootings and murders has gotten worse.
