Like many events this year, the Federalist Society’s National Lawyers Convention will be online, Monday through Friday of next week, November 9-13. The good news is that you can attend all the talks for free* and without traveling to Washington. The bad news is that we won’t have all the networking in receptions and hallways. There will be no black-tie dinner, where we usually have our most prominent speaker, but Justice Alito will address the convention on Thursday evening. The full agenda is here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

There are an unusual number of panels of interest to criminal law practitioners this year.<\/p>\n

Registration is panel-by-panel. The asterisk on “free,” above, is because there is a charge if you want continuing education credit. They tell me the charge is “nominal.”<\/p>\n

The Criminal Law Practice Group’s panel is Monday at 2:00 pm ET \/ 11:00 am PT. The topic is Prosecutorial Discretion, Partisanship, and the Rule of Law<\/em><\/a>. The discussion will address politically controversial investigations. Speakers are former AG Michael Mukasey, former acting DAG Gary Grindler, Andrew McCarthy, and Kenneth Wainstein. Judge Barbara Lagoa of USCA11 is the moderator.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday at 3:45 pm ET \/ 12:45 pm PT, the Civil Rights Practice Group has a panel titled Modern Quandaries of Law Enforcement<\/em><\/a>. From the description it appears to be mainly about qualified immunity. The speakers are Heather MacDonald of the Manhattan Institute, Cully Stimson of the Heritage Foundation, Larry James of Crabbe Brown & James LLP, and Robert MacNamara of Institute for Justice.<\/p>\n

Thursday at 11:00 am ET \/ 8:00 am (yawn) PT is A Discussion with Professors Robert George and Cornel West on Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Thought, the Black Lives Matter Movement, and the Cancel Culture<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

This is followed at 12:45 pm ET \/ 9:45 am PT by Law, Social Justice, Wokeness and the Protests: Where Do We Go From Here?<\/em><\/a> Speakers are Randy Barnett of Georgetown Law, Randall Kennedy of Harvard Law, John McGinness of Northwestern Law, and Nadine Strossen of NY Law School and former ACLU President. Judge Kenneth Lee of USCA9 is the moderator.<\/p>\n

Thursday at 6:00 pm ET \/ 3:00 pm PT is an Address by Judge Janice Rogers Brown<\/em><\/a>, USCA-DC (ret.) and formerly Cal. Supreme Ct. Her talk is titled Love Letter to the Late, Great American Republic.<\/em><\/p>\n

Justice Alito’s address<\/a>, noted above, follows at 8:00 pm ET \/ 5:00 pm PT Thursday. No title has been announced as of this time.<\/p>\n

Finally, on Friday morning at 11:00 am ET \/ 8:00 am PT is The Future of the Second Amendment’s Right to Keep and Bear Arms: From the Supreme Court to Social Unrest in the Streets<\/em><\/a>. Speakers are Deepak Gupta, John Ohlendorf, and Mark Smith. Judge Thomas Hardiman of USCA-3 moderates.<\/p>\n
