{"id":2375,"date":"2020-11-10T10:54:10","date_gmt":"2020-11-10T18:54:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.crimeandconsequences.blog\/?p=2375"},"modified":"2020-11-10T10:54:10","modified_gmt":"2020-11-10T18:54:10","slug":"the-end-for-court-packing-and-defunding-the-police","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.crimeandconsequences.blog\/?p=2375","title":{"rendered":"The End for Court Packing and Defunding the Police"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the wake of last week&#8217;s election, Republicans currently have 50 Senate seats and Democrats have 48.\u00a0 Depending on the results of two special elections to be held in Georgia on January 5, Democrats could conceivably get to a 50-50 tie, with VP-elect Harris holding the tie-breaking vote.\u00a0 That could mean the passage of radical measures such as defunding the police or packing the federal courts, in particular the Supreme Court.\u00a0 But we now know that, regardless of the outcome of the special elections, those things will not be happening in the upcoming Congress.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The famously moderate Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WVA) put a fork in it yesterday.\u00a0 As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollcall.com\/2020\/11\/09\/joe-manchin-kills-dreams-of-expanding-supreme-court-eliminating-the-filibuster\/\">reported in Roll Call<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>West Virginia Democrat\u00a0<a class=\"memberLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollcall.com\/members\/2120?utm_source=memberLinks&amp;utm_medium=memberlinks&amp;personid=2120\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Manchin III<\/a> wants to make clear that he will not be the 50th vote in favor of eliminating the legislative filibuster or expanding the size of the Supreme Court in a potential 50-50 Senate&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI commit to you tonight, and I commit to all of your viewers and everyone else that\u2019s watching.
