A state agency\u00a0<a class=\"icon none\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/minneapolis-push-to-defund-overhaul-police-department-is-killed-for-now-11596669299?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">killed the push for now<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>John Elder, spokesman for the Minneapolis Police Department, said\u00a0<a class=\"icon none\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/in-minneapolis-armed-residents-set-up-patrols-amid-calls-to-defund-the-police-11595698725?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an increase in crime there<\/a>\u00a0mirrors\u00a0<a class=\"icon none\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/whats-fueling-new-york-citys-rise-in-violent-crime-there-are-several-theories-11597064288?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">upticks happening in a number of U.S. cities<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Year-to-date, murders are up 65% compared with all of 2019. Shootings have more than doubled compared with the same period last year. Carjackings are up more than 300%, with 385 reported through Dec. 8.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere has been such an anti-law-enforcement rhetoric that people have been emboldened to go out and do what they want,\u201d Mr. Elder said.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Jenkins, the city council member, attributed some of the rise in the area\u2019s crime to the barriers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis autonomous zone has created an atmosphere of criminal activity and drug sales and violence, gun shots, and that\u2019s separate from people who are occupying the space,\u201d said Ms. Jenkins.
