{"id":2546,"date":"2020-12-11T16:02:00","date_gmt":"2020-12-12T00:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.crimeandconsequences.blog\/?p=2546"},"modified":"2020-12-13T08:58:49","modified_gmt":"2020-12-13T16:58:49","slug":"bill-barr-like-jeff-sessions-acted-on-principle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.crimeandconsequences.blog\/?p=2546","title":{"rendered":"Bill Barr, Like Jeff Sessions, Acted on Principle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For full disclosure purposes, I should begin by saying that I know Bill Barr slightly and spoke with him on the phone a while back about matters not involving either the election or the Supreme Court.\u00a0 With that out of the way, let me say this:\u00a0 It&#8217;s time for Barr&#8217;s enemies to step up to apologize for their numerous false and scurrilous attacks on him.\u00a0 He has proven to be a worthy successor to Jeff Sessions\u00a0 &#8212;\u00a0 another man who put principle before ambition\u00a0 &#8212;\u00a0 and has shown himself to be an honorable leader of the Justice Department.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/the-morning-jolt\/barrs-critics-should-reconsider\/?utm_source=Sailthru&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=MJ_20201211&amp;utm_term=Jolt-Smart\">National Review captures<\/a> the most recent revelations\u00a0 &#8212;\u00a0 revelations that starkly disprove the allegations against Barr:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Everyone who ever called U.S. attorney general a partisan hack who put President Trump\u2019s personal and political interests ahead of the law, please line up to make a very public apology.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/barr-worked-to-keep-hunter-biden-probes-from-public-view-during-election-11607653188?mod=djemalertNEWS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The\u00a0<em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>\u00a0reports:<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Attorney General William Barr has known about a disparate set of investigations involving Hunter Biden\u2019s business and financial dealings since at least this spring, a person familiar with the matter said, and worked to avoid their public disclosure during the heated election campaign.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Republicans and President Trump have pressed Mr. Barr for months to pursue Mr. Biden, especially as his father, Joe Biden, gained momentum in his ultimately successful bid for president. Mr. Barr has staved off pressure from Republicans in Congress for information into the investigations, the person said, without elaborating on his actions.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Think about how often you heard allegedly well-informed, allegedly astute political talking heads insist that Barr was a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/william-barr-trump-2020-election-investigation-msnbc-durham-1476646\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ruthless, relentless political hack and a thug,<\/a>\u201d \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2020\/05\/21\/is-bill-barr-the-most-dangerous-member-of-the-trump-administration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the most dangerous member of the Trump administration,<\/a>\u201d and accusations that Barr was \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/sethcohen\/2020\/09\/18\/is-attorney-general-william-barr-interfering-with-the-election-why-critics-are-demanding-an-investigation\/?sh=bdef37756e7a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">interfering in the election<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/outlook\/2020\/11\/12\/barr-memo-trump-campaign\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">weaponizing law enforcement.<\/a>\u201d Or the number of times you heard Barr was \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/washingtonmonthly.com\/2020\/09\/01\/how-ratcliffe-and-barr-are-aiding-trumps-collusion-with-putin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">aiding Trump\u2019s collusion with Putin,<\/a>\u201d \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/prospect.org\/justice\/five-ways-william-barr-is-turning-america-into-a-dictatorship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">turning America into a dictatorship,<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2020\/aug\/02\/william-barr-attorney-general-trump-washington\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a danger to democracy.<\/a>\u201d Remember Eric Holder insisting Barr was \u201cunfit to lead the Justice Department\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>Does any of that fit a man who knew that his department was in the early stages of a criminal investigation of the son of the Democratic nominee, and kept it out of the newspapers?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>This comes after Barr publicly declared that he has \u201cnot seen fraud on a scale that could have effected a different outcome in the election,\u201d infuriating every Trump fan who thinks the election was stolen and undermining the arguments of Trump\u2019s legal team. Now we know Barr kept quiet about the Hunter Biden investigation \u2014 even when the Trump campaign was metaphorically screaming at the top of its lungs about Hunter Biden. Barr kept quiet because the Department of Justice is not supposed to influence the outcome of the election \u2014 even if that denies a potential advantage to the attorney general\u2019s boss. Barr could have \u201cpulled a Jim Comey\u201d and shaken up the race with a dramatic revelation as Americans were casting their ballots. He chose not to do so.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>William Barr is the guy who follows the law and preestablished procedure and the evidence to the truthful conclusion, whether it is good for his side or not, and whether it is what he wants to see or not. Of course, Barr is a conservative Republican, he has a clear viewpoint on what constitutes justice and how law enforcement should operate, and he\u2019s going to have fierce disagreements with liberals.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/03\/02\/politics\/william-barr-george-hw-bush\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">But William Barr is largely the same man, with the same viewpoints, as he was when he was attorney general under George H. W. Bush.<\/a>\u00a0He\u2019s always believed in extensive powers of the executive branch. He\u2019s always been comfortable taking an unpopular stance.
