{"id":2579,"date":"2020-12-15T13:03:56","date_gmt":"2020-12-15T21:03:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.crimeandconsequences.blog\/?p=2579"},"modified":"2020-12-15T13:05:03","modified_gmt":"2020-12-15T21:05:03","slug":"gascon-to-shorten-sentence-for-cop-killer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.crimeandconsequences.blog\/?p=2579","title":{"rendered":"Gasc\u00f3n to Shorten Sentence for Cop Killer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Newly elected Los Angeles District Attorney George Gasc\u00f3n has decided to drop the special circumstance allegations for a Utah man who killed two people on the same day in June of 2019.\u00a0 Robert Gearty of Fox News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/las-da-george-gascon-accused-cop-killers\">reports<\/a> that during a crime-spree which\u00a0 included two armed robberies, Rhett Nelson shot off-duty LA Sheriff&#8217;s Deputy Joseph Solano while he was waiting in line at a Jack in the Box.\u00a0 Earlier that day Nelson shot and killed Dmitry Kolsov as he stood outside a building in downtown LA.\u00a0\u00a0 Police believe that the killings were random.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Nelson has been charged with two counts of murder and two counts of robbery with special circumstances including multiple murder, use of a firearm and shooting from a vehicle.\u00a0 If convicted of the murders and one of the special circumstances, Nelson would be eligible for a sentence of life without possibility of parole.\u00a0 Shortly after election Gasc\u00f3n announced that his office would not impose special circumstances to increase a criminal&#8217;s sentence.
