Sarah Elbeshbishi and Mabinty Quarshie have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2021\/03\/07\/usa-today-ipsos-poll-just-18-support-defund-police-movement\/4599232001\/\">this report<\/a> in USA Today.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Support to redistribute police department funding has decreased among Americans since August after a summer of protests had erupted across the country against racial injustice and police brutality, a recent Ipsos\/USA TODAY poll found.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The call to redistribute police budgets stemmed from Black Lives Matter activists and protesters who called to &#8220;defund the police&#8221; after the deaths of unarmed Black Americans at the hands of police, such as George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.<\/p>\n<p>While some believe defunding the police is a call to get rid of law enforcement completely, many activists behind the slogan intended to make a more nuanced argument for police budgets to be steered toward community social programs so officers were less often required to take on roles better suited to social workers.<\/p>\n<p>Only 18% of respondents supported the movement known as &#8220;defund the police,&#8221; and 58% said they opposed it. Though white Americans (67%) and Republicans (84%) were much more likely to oppose the movement, only 28% of Black Americans and 34% of Democrats were in favor of it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The idea that more social programs will reduce crime goes way back. That was part of the sales pitch that LBJ used to sell America on his Great Society over half a century ago. Instead, crime rose at horrifying rates for the two decades following enactment.<\/p>\n<p>That is not to say that there are not some social programs that do some good, possibly including reduced crime as a side effect. But expecting major crime reduction is a foolish pipe dream, and cutting the police budget to fund them is incredibly misguided. There are few things more destructive to the social fabric than a dangerous environment where people feel they are under constant threat of violence. Gangs thrive, in part, because some young people feel that they have to join one to have some degree of protection in high crime areas.<\/p>\n<p>The best thing we can do for the good people of poor neighborhoods is to provide better and more effective policing. If more social programs are needed, find the funding elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Where else? For just one example, amend all the &#8220;prevailing wage&#8221; laws so that government actually does pay prevailing wages, not inflated wages, for all the labor it buys.
