Part I"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hey everyone!\u00a0 It&#8217;s &#8220;Second Chance Month.&#8221;\u00a0 President Biden has said so himself (see this <a href=\"https:\/\/sentencing.typepad.com\/sentencing_law_and_policy\/2021\/04\/how-about-some-clemency-grants-from-prez-biden-to-go-with-second-chance-month-2021-proclamation.html\">piece<\/a> at SL&amp;P).\u00a0 The President is a bit short on specifics, but assures us that, &#8220;During Second Chance Month, we lift up all those who, having made mistakes, are committed to rejoining society and making meaningful contributions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Mistakes,&#8221; got that?\u00a0 Fleecing grandma out of her life savings, selling smack to an addicted 16 year-old, raping a first grader\u00a0 &#8212;\u00a0 look people, don&#8217;t be so judgmental.\u00a0 They&#8217;re just &#8220;mistakes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll be saying more in future posts about the Happy Face, if fact-free, yammering about second chances.\u00a0 For now, I just want to focus on the one question that cries out to be asked but never is:\u00a0 A second chance <strong><em>to do what<\/em><\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s Washington Post, of all things, provides a glimpse of the answer.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the headline of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/public-safety\/triple-homicide-suspect-previously-convicted\/2021\/04\/07\/cf8394fe-97d0-11eb-a6d0-13d207aadb78_story.html?utm_campaign=wp_afternoon_buzz&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=newsletter&amp;wpisrc=nl_buzz&amp;carta-url=https%3A%2F%2Fs2.washingtonpost.com%2Fcar-ln-tr%2F31c7587%2F606f63359d2fda1dfb474fcb%2F5fe92a9eade4e21670c7e443%2F29%2F42%2F606f63359d2fda1dfb474fcb\">story<\/a>:\u00a0 &#8220;Man charged in Prince George\u2019s triple slaying previously went to prison for D.C. homicide in 2000, records show.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Oooooops.\u00a0 Looks like the ex-offender&#8217;s &#8220;meaningful contributions&#8221; weren&#8217;t exactly what Mr. Biden and his fatuous crew at DOJ keep lecturing us about.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Sayyid Malik Hayat, the man charged this week with murder in the\u00a0<a title=\"www.washingtonpost.com\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/public-safety\/triple-homicide-prince-georges\/2021\/04\/03\/1d0ba1ea-9479-11eb-a74e-1f4cf89fd948_story.html?itid=lk_inline_manual_1\">killings of three people in a Prince George\u2019s County fire station parking lot<\/a>, previously served time in prison for fatally stabbing a takeout delivery driver when he was a teenager, court records show.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>Hayat, who is being held without bond at the county jail on the new charges, was arrested and indicted in the summer of 2000 after he stabbed 41-year-old Hong Guang Gao in the chest in Northeast Washington, according to court records and <a title=\"www.washingtonpost.com\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/archive\/local\/2000\/06\/29\/crime-38\/ad485f09-8d0b-4cfb-90ea-cea061b57635\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_3\">news reports at the time<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know why he&#8217;s being held without bond.\u00a0 Haven&#8217;t these characters heard of bail reform?\u00a0 Where are our progressive prosecutors now that we need them?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Hayat was 17 years old at the time of the fatal stabbing and was charged as an adult with murder, according to news reports at the time.
