{"id":3942,"date":"2021-06-04T12:01:56","date_gmt":"2021-06-04T19:01:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.crimeandconsequences.blog\/?p=3942"},"modified":"2021-06-04T12:03:15","modified_gmt":"2021-06-04T19:03:15","slug":"governor-newsom-releases-more-violent-criminals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.crimeandconsequences.blog\/?p=3942","title":{"rendered":"Governor Newsom Releases More Violent Criminals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Katy Grimes from The California Globe has <a href=\"https:\/\/californiaglobe.com\/section-2\/gov-newsom-pardons-murderers-bank-robbers-kidnappers-killer-for-hire\/\">this story<\/a> covering Newsom\u2019s announcement on May 28th, \u201c[He} <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/5.28.21-Clemency-certs.pdf\">granted<\/a> 14 pardons, 13 commutations and 8 medical reprieves \u2013 for murderers, bank robbers, armed robbers, kidnappers, killers for hire, drivers of get-away-cars for murderers, and assaulters with firearms.\u201d Yet again we are looking at the release of criminals who have been convicted of heinous, violent crimes that would lead any reasonable person to believe pose a threat to the safety and security of the community in which they are released into.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Grimes points out the significance of \u201cgood time\u201d served while incarcerated.\u00a0 Good time operates on the assumption that these criminals have been rehabilitated and completed appropriate and effective programs to ensure they will be productive members of society.\u00a0 However, in many instances this is not the case, and they could have earned these time served credits by flying under the radar so-to-speak, which is a far cry from being rehabilitated.\u00a0 Grimes states, \u201cThere are 5,000 sex offenders in California state prisons with only one treatment program.\u201d Keeping this in mind, it stands to reason this one program may not work for every person, and it would be rather easy go relatively unnoticed and \u201cpass\u201d the program.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Grimes reports on the historical legislation that has led to this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Following Gov. Jerry Brown\u2019s\u00a0AB 109\u00a0and\u00a0AB 117 in 2011, ostensibly to reduce the prison population in state facilities, \u201cPrison Realignment\u201d was sold as needed to decrease California\u2019s prison population by shifting \u201cnew non-violent, non-serious, and non-sexual offenders\u201d from state prisons to county jails, while concurrently reforming the state\u2019s parole system\u2026There were 175,000 inmates in prison in 2011 when Gov. Brown signed AB 109, and now there are less than half of that. What\u2019s left in prison are the most very serious and dangerous individuals. These inmates being released are some of the most violent remaining prisoners.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Therefore, the inmates Newsom approved for release are those who were sentenced and remained incarcerated as a matter of public safety and accountability.
