{"id":4033,"date":"2021-06-22T14:11:14","date_gmt":"2021-06-22T21:11:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.crimeandconsequences.blog\/?p=4033"},"modified":"2021-06-22T14:11:14","modified_gmt":"2021-06-22T21:11:14","slug":"chicago-mayor-clueless-about-crime-in-her-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.crimeandconsequences.blog\/?p=4033","title":{"rendered":"Chicago Mayor Clueless About Crime in Her City"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After a record number of shootings last year and 875 deaths, nearly twice as many as in 2019, violent crime in Chicago is on track\u00a0 to set a new record this year.\u00a0 According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/chicago-has-seen-217-more-shooting-victims-2021-so-far-compared-2020-1588303\">Newsweek<\/a>, there were 956 shootings in Chicago resulting in 185 deaths during the first quarter of 2021, a 14% increase in homicide compared to the same period last year.\u00a0 In the face of last year&#8217;s skyrocketing homicide rate and Black Lives Matter riots, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot proposed cutting the police department&#8217;s budget by $59 million, while telling reporters that she does not support defunding the police as <a href=\"https:\/\/chicago.cbslocal.com\/2020\/10\/21\/mayor-lightfoots-budget-proposal-calls-for-cuts-to-police-budget-but-mayor-remains-against-defunding-police\/\">reported<\/a> by CBS News.\u00a0 She has variously blamed Chicago&#8217;s shootings and murders on former President Trump, the Corona Virus, and gun laws in Indiana and Texas.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Following two mass shootings in Chicago last week with 18 shot and 5 dead, Mayor Lightfoot went on <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/injured-2nd-mass-shooting-chicago-days\/story?id=78287039\">television<\/a> to blame the massacres on &#8220;illegal guns.&#8221;\u00a0 Two days later she <a href=\"https:\/\/abc7chicago.com\/mayor-lori-lightfoot-racism-chicago-department-of-public-health-news\/10801185\/\">declared<\/a> racism in Chicago a &#8220;public health crisis&#8221;
