{"id":8961,"date":"2023-05-15T13:46:13","date_gmt":"2023-05-15T20:46:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.crimeandconsequences.blog\/?p=8961"},"modified":"2023-05-16T09:45:28","modified_gmt":"2023-05-16T16:45:28","slug":"banning-traffic-stops-to-prevent-racism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.crimeandconsequences.blog\/?p=8961","title":{"rendered":"Banning Traffic Stops to Cure Racism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Law enforcement groups are warning that cities across the country implementing policies to prohibit most traffic stops by police are going to result in a preventable increase in crime.\u00a0 The New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/04\/15\/us\/police-traffic-stops.html\">reports<\/a> that cities including Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Seattle, Berkeley, Lansing, Mich, Brooklyn Center, Minn, and the State of Virginia have adopted such policies.\u00a0 The City of Los Angeles is also considering having unarmed civilians enforce &#8220;safety related traffic violations,&#8221; such as speeding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2023-05-09\/long-delayed-plan-to-have-civilians-not-police-make-traffic-stops-set-for-release\">according<\/a> to the LA Times.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Traffic stops are often dangerous for officers, who often don&#8217;t know the identity or race of the driver or the passengers in the vehicle until it is pulled over.\u00a0 Violations such as no license plate or expired tags often mean that the vehicle is stolen.\u00a0 A car that is speeding or driving erratically often has an intoxicated driver.\u00a0 In each of these situations a stop may become far more important than the traffic violation.\u00a0 Traffic stops are a major source of arrests for illegally armed gang members, wanted criminals and drug traffickers.\u00a0 Occasionally traffic stops result in officers being shot, sometimes fatally.<\/p>\n<p>Last week a suspect was stopped in East Jordan, Michigan for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/news\/2023\/05\/michigan-police-make-routine-traffic-stop-find-driver-is-wanted-in-2011-las-vegas-murder.html\">traffic<\/a> violation. A routine check of his driver&#8217;s license revealed he was wanted in Las Vegas for murder, first degree kidnapping, armed robbery and drug trafficking.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Last month Nebraska police pulled over Darrell Harrison Jr., for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1011now.com\/2023\/04\/03\/seward-county-sheriffs-office-arrests-pennsylvanian-murder-suspect-during-traffic-stop\/\">traffic<\/a> violation.\u00a0 Harrison was wanted for the murder of a 21-year-old man in Pennsylvania.\u00a0 In February Police arrested 25-year-old Keiontay Davis during a routine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlantanewsfirst.com\/2023\/02\/27\/murder-suspect-arrested-during-traffic-stop-atlanta\/\">traffic<\/a> stop in Atlanta.\u00a0 Davis was wanted for a September 2022 aggravated assault and murder.\u00a0 Last Sunday Maryland Police tried to pull over a U-Haul van after complaints that it was driving erratically.\u00a0 The driver, Dennis Bell, ended up crashing the van in a ditch.\u00a0 He was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/maryland-police-find-kidnapped-woman-sitting-naked-uhaul-traffic-stop\">arrested<\/a> after officers found a naked, kidnapped woman in the van with knife wounds.\u00a0 Bell is being charged with kidnapping, first degree assault, sexual assault, possession of cocaine and driving while intoxicated.<\/p>\n<p>None of these cases are particularly unusual.\u00a0\u00a0 Three suspected murderers and a kidnapper were discovered during routine traffic stops that progressives insist should be prohibited.\u00a0 Can you imagine an unarmed civilian handling these offenders?\u00a0\u00a0 Was the race of the suspects or the officers important in these incidents?<\/p>\n<p>At a time when crime and violence have reached levels that are driving people and businesses out of many large American cities, progressive politicians want to take away a very important means of identifying and apprehending criminals.<\/p>\n<p>What could possibly go wrong?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Law enforcement groups are warning that cities across the country implementing policies to prohibit most traffic stops by police are going to result in a preventable increase in crime.\u00a0 The New York Times reports that cities including Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Seattle, Berkeley, Lansing, Mich, Brooklyn Center, Minn, and the State of Virginia have adopted such policies.\u00a0 The City of Los Angeles is also considering having unarmed civilians enforce &#8220;safety related traffic violations,&#8221;
