The Tide Starts to Turn

I’ve taken the title of this post from an entry on Power Line by my friend Steve Hayward.  He in turn is recounting a USAToday/Ipsos survey titled, “Stark divide on race, policing emerges since George Floyd’s death.”  The gist of it is captured in the first sentence:

Americans’ trust in the Black Lives Matter movement has fallen and their faith in local law enforcement has risen since protests demanding social justice swept the nation last year, according to an exclusive USA TODAY/Ipsos Poll.

Blacks Overwhelmingly Want the Police Presence They Have Now — or More.

One of the narratives we hear constantly from the Left is that African Americans distrust the police and want their malign presence in black neighborhoods decreased if not eliminated.  Like so much else we hear from progressives  —  the people who ceaselessly wail that we need to pay more attention to “fact-based” this and “evidence-based” that  —  their claims are not merely fact-free but affirmatively false.  According to a Gallup poll released today, more blacks than whites want increased police patrolling in their neighborhoods.

Strong Majority of Americans Oppose Defunding the Police

An ABC/Ipsos poll finds that 64% of Americans oppose defuding the police, while 34% approve it.  The story is here.  Interestingly, it also notes:

…Democrats stand as the lone faction among the political tribes that approve by a majority of defunding the police (55%) and redirecting it to mental health, housing and education programs (59%).  But Democrats are more divided in their support than Republicans and Independents are in their opposition, with 43% and 41% of Democrats opposing both defunding the police, and using the money for other purposes, respectively.

If I were Donald Trump’s campaign manager  —  which I surely am not  — this would give me a clue about what issues to stress.
