NYPD Commissioner Demands End to Zero Bail
The head of the New York City Police Department spoke out Wednesday demanding that state politicians repeal the 2020 bail reform laws that have turned the criminal justice system into a “revolving door.” Michael Dorgan of Fox News reports that NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch told attendees to an annual breakfast meeting that “your cops are out there doing their jobs, and in 2024, they made the most felony arrests in 26 years. But before they can even finish that paperwork, they are immediately returned to the neighborhood and the people that they just victimized.”
The Commissioner noted that while crime has decreased so far this year, repeat offenders released without bail are committing multiple serious and violent crimes without facing consequences. “It’s demoralizing. It’s unsustainable, and it defies common sense,” she said.
Tisch also targeted Manhattan’s pro-criminal, Soros-funded District Attorney Alvin Bragg by bringing up the case of Tyreke Martin. Martin, who has 70 prior arrests, including allegedly bashing a 2-year-old girl with a suitcase in Manhattan, was arrested last week after Tisch said he tried to rape a woman after assaulting her. Before the incident, he had an arrest warrant pending for punching a woman in the face. When police arrested him for the bench warrant, the district attorney’s office declined to prosecute the case, and then a judge vacated his warrant. She said that the number of suspects arrested three or more times in 2024 increased by 61% for burglary, 64% for shoplifting, 71% for grand larceny, 83% for robbery and 5,019% for auto theft. None of these crimes are considered serious enough by Bragg to prosecute.
Perhaps if someone steals his car he’ll change his mind.
The takeaways here are that zero bail and not prosecuting criminals does not make cities safer.
