Unqualified AG Candidate Removed from DC Ballot

The District of Columbia Court of Appeals today affirmed a trial court decision removing the leading candidate for Attorney General from the ballot. The qualification statute requires that the candidate have been actively involved for 5 of the last 10 years in the practice of law, service as a judge, being a law professor at a DC law school, or “As an attorney employed in the District of Columbia by the United States or the District of Columbia.”

The court held that legislative service as a council member by a person who happens to be an attorney does not meet the last criterion.

California requires only being a member of the bar for five years. No actual experience required. Continue reading . . .

Can You Spot the Commonality?

As liberal programs for less accountability for criminals take root in one city after another  —  “criminal justice reform” is its intentionally opaque name  —  criminals have noticed.  So have their victims.  The quality and safety of urban life cascade downhill,  but the most affected remain the common folk, so the political and academic elites can pretend it’s all a big mystery (or just ignore it).  But the New York Times, of all things, spills the beans, albeit indirectly and unintentionally.

The Practical Problems Caused by a Rogue Prosecutor’s Policies

Charles Stimson and Zack Smith of the Heritage Foundation have this series of the three videos on the impact of LA DA George Gascón’s policies.

The first is an interview with LA County Sheriff Alex Villanueva. The second is a panel discussion with three present and former prosecutors in the office. The third is a panel discussion with mothers whose sons were murdered.

The gathering of signatures for a recall election continues.

At Least Progressive Prosecutors Have Strong Family Support

Mayilyn Mosby is  the very progressive State’s Attorney for Baltimore.  She was recently indicted by Joe Biden’s Justice Department for a bit of financial razzle-dazzle, and some old-fashioned lying, in connection with her purchase of a luxury apartment in Florida.  She has claimed  —  and I’m not making this up  —  that the charges are racially motivated.

Still, one must give Ms. Mosby her due.  The State’s Attorney position is an elected office, for which she had to campaign (and is campaigning again despite the federal indictment).  Campaigns cost money, so contributions are needed.  Ms. Mosby reported receiving a contribution from her grandfather, a former police officer.  That would be heartening in a way, except for the catch.

The Crime Epidemic in Larry Krasner’s Philadelphia

Crime is out of control in Philadelphia.  There were 562 homicides last year, twice as many than eight years ago, and homicides have increased by 19% so far this year.  The city’s Police Commissioner reports that last year’s 750 carjackings were triple the number in 2019.   For perspective, New York City, which has more than five times the population of Philadelphia, had 485 homicides and 510 carjackings last year.   A data snapshot from last year indicates that police arrested only 31% of the Philadelphia’s murderers, 14% of criminals who shot people,  and 11% of those committing property crimes.  “Far too many in our city think that it’s open season to commit crime here in Philadelphia,” said the Police Commissioner.  They think it’s open season because it is open season.

George Gascon’s Los Angeles: Welcome to the Third World

Progressive prosecutors are making a name for themselves.  In the dreamworld of legal academia, it’s all wonderful.  In the actual world normal people inhabit, it’s something different.  In Kim Foxx’s Chicago, it’s murder galore, especially of black people (whom she falsely claims to want to protect).  Much the same in Larry Krasner’s Philadelphia.  In Marilyn Mosby’s Baltimore, the bloodshed is now compounded by an almost comical (by contrast) federal indictment for rampant dishonesty.  In George Gascon’s Los Angeles, a picture is worth a thousand words.

What Larry Krasner, Philly’s “Progressive Prosecutor,” Owns

Philadelphia DA Larry Krasner is not a stranger to followers of the blog.  He’s a “progressive prosecutor,” in the mold of the State’s Attorney a hundred miles south in Baltimore, the recently indicted Marilyn Mosby.  A Facebook friend of mine, Matt Rosenberg, author of “What Next Chicago?:  Notes of a Pissed Off Native Son,”  writes an on-the-ground account of what it’s like, especially for black people, living (for as long as they can) in Larry Krasner’s Philadelphia.  I want to pass it along without comment, none being needed.
