Portland Follow-Up

Following up on Tuesday’s post on the Multnomah County District Attorney election, the Oregonian has called the race for challenger Nathan Vasquez over the Soros-backed incumbent Mike Schmidt. Vasquez’s margin is 8% on partial returns Wednesday afternoon and projected to be 5% in the final tally. “The Oregonian/OregonLive determined Schmidt has no statistical path to victory.”

As always in politics, unfortunately, money matters. Now, it appears, business interests are finally waking up to the consequences of letting pro-crime megadonor George Soros buy elections for chief prosecutors who are determined to unravel the social fabric. From the Oregonian story:

Money poured into both campaigns, with Vasquez seeing strong support from downtown business interests and reform-minded donors, including a group with ties to Democratic megadonor George Soros, infusing Schmidt’s coffers with last-minute donations. Both candidates brought in more than $1 million each in contributions.

Five percent may not seem like a large margin, but when you consider the incumbent advantage, particularly in “down ticket” races, this is a major accomplishment.
