Supreme Court: First Amendment Protects Donor Privacy
The U.S. Supreme Court today held 6-3 that the First Amendment protects nonprofit organizations from blanket requirements to disclose their donors. The case is Americans for Prosperity Foundation v. Bonta, No. 19-251.The Court also ruled in favor of Arizona in its election law challenge case. This completes the decisions for cases fully briefed and argued this term.
The Court holds a conference today and will release the results tomorrow. Summary decisions are possible then, and we may have more cases taken up for briefing over the summer and argument in the next term, which begins the first Monday in October.
