March U.S. Supreme Court Arguments

The U.S. Supreme Court has released its calendar of March oral arguments. Only one is an actual criminal case.

On March 23, the joined cases of United States v. Briggs, No. 19-108 and United States v. Collins, No. 19-184 will address the statute of limitations for rape under military law.

In the crime-related civil suit category, we have Torres v. Madrid, No. 19-292. This is a suit by a suspect shot by police after she nearly ran over one of them with her vehicle while escaping.

Tanzin v. Tanvir, No. 19-71, is about personal liability for damages under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. The outcome could have implications for law enforcement officers.

Trump v. Vance, No. 19-635, arises from an objection to a subpoena in a criminal investigation, but I expect it will turn on issues that are unlikely to affect day-to-day law enforcement work.

Pereida v. Barr, No. 19-438, dives once more into the murky waters of convictions and deportation.
